Of snakes and men

Sure! Now with all the rattlesnakes snuggled in their underground dens for the winter, I find a couple of stories about eem. Actually, rattlers don't snuggle so much as they slither into a great big ball. Some dens may hold only a couple dozen while others may have hundreds. It was one of those really big dens that my father blasted during the winter of 1934-35 on Marco Hill. He was working in a crew rebuilding the road between Camas Prairie and Hot Springs.

When my buddy Slats went hunting, his dad most always gave him one shell. It was still depression time and Slats' dad said one shell was enough for one deer. Walt Senior had once been a full-time hunter, shooting meat for crews building the railroad. He had an ancient looking single shot rifle with a bore you could stick your finger in.

Cynthia Goldthwait

Cynthia Goldthwait died peacefully at home on Oct. 23, 2004. Cynthia was born Dec. 17, 1923 in Syracuse, New York. She was the daughter of Claude and Ethel McNett. She worked in her parents' bakery and candy shop, also as a crossing guard for the Syracuse Police Department. She married Woodrow Goldthwait after his return from fighting in the Pacific during W.W. II. They had one son, Glenn in 1949. After Glenn moved to Montana in 1977, they soon followed. Cynthia always dreamed of a log cabin in the woods. That dream was realized when Glenn built their cabin, just off Farm to Market Road. She was proud of the fact that she helped peel the logs.
