Whitefish boys improve to 3-0 in soccer

WHITEFISH — Four different players figured in the scoring as Whitefish leveled Livingston 4-0 in boys Class A nonconference soccer play on Saturday at Smith Fields.

Xander Burger’s goal, with Ian Lacey assisting, just four minutes into play had Whitefish off to a strong start.

An own goal, thanks to Riley Arendt, at 25 minutes gave Whitefish a 2-0 halftime lead.

Sam Menicke and Chase Savin scored for Whitefish in the second half.

“We are continuing to build with good possession soccer,” Whitefish coach John Lacey said.

“Defense continues to play outstanding. Colter Upton is having an outstanding start to the season.”

Upton had six saves in posting the shutout.

“Chase’s (Savin) goal was an absolute banger,” coach Lacey said.

“From 30-plus yards. He hit it great.”

Whitefish (3-0 overall) hosts Laurel on Friday (5 p.m.) and Billings Central on Saturday (noon).

Glacier 8, Missoula Big Sky 1

MISSOULA — Seven different players scored for Glacier in a blow out of Big Sky in a Western AA matchup.

Glacier (2-2 overall, 1-1 in league) led 3-0 at the half.

Solomon Dalla Betta scored two of Glacier’s five second-half goals.

Braden Nitschelm assisted on two scores while Dyllyn Stabler and Sullivan Coggins had one goal and one assist each.

“A great way to bounce back from the crosstown match,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said.

He said the offense, which had 30 shots on goal, created “more goal scoring opportunities” than it did in Thursday’s 4-2 loss to Flathead.

He also praised the team’s “great defensive” work.

Glacier is back in action Friday at Helena Capital and Saturday at Helena High.

MISSOULA — Polson found the net for thre goals in the first eight minutes of play to coast by Loyola for the nonconference win.

Mack Moderie scored three goals and assisted on another.

Bridger Wenzel and Robin Erickson both had two assists and one goal.

Scoring the other goal for Polson was Elijah Taylor.

Polson entertains Billings Central on Friday (5 p.m.) and Laurel on Saturday (10 a.m.)

Whitefish 2, Livingston 0

WHITEFISH — Anna Cook and Olivia Potthoff accounted for all the scoring and Sami Galbraith was stellar minding the net as Whitefish shut out Livingston.

Cook and Poffhoff now have two goals each on the season.

Galbraith had three keeper saves.

Whitefish outshot Livingston on goal 24-9.

“Their keeper made some great saves,” Whitefish coach Roland Benedict said.

“We had some good shots (in the first half), but not from areas that we were looking for.”

That changed after halftime.

Whitefish (2-1) hosts Laurel on Friday (3 p.m.) and Billings Central on Saturday (10 a.m.)

MISSOULA — The Hannah Santamaria and Whitney Morrison combination accounted for three scores as Big Sky topped Glacier in Western AA play.

Santamaria, who had three assists, also had two goals.

Morrison scored twice and assisted on another.

Madison Becker scored in the 62nd minute for Glacier with Micah Hicketheir assisting.

“We were really trying to figure things out in first half, things didn’t go in our favor,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said.

“We won the second half, were a completely different team.

“I’m extremely proud of the work rate of Madison Becker and our adjustment in the midfield in the second half,” Bryd added. “They really stepped it up.”

Glacier (0-3-1, 0-2) plays at Helena Capital on Friday and Helena High on Saturday.
