Flathead's Perrin ends x-country season with AA title

MISSOULA – Flathead’s Ben Perrin capped off his spectacular senior cross-country season by claiming the Class AA boys title at the MHSA State Meet on Saturday at the University of Montana Golf Course.

“It’s well earned,” Flathead coach Jesse Rumsey said. “He’s worked so hard. He really deserves everything that he got. It was great to see him take the final title for his senior year after winning every meet all season long. He’s had an amazing season.”

Perrin crossed the finish line with a time of 15 minutes, 43.60 seconds. The last Flathead runner to win a state boys title was Perrin’s brother, Zach, in 2015.

“Ben has stepped into the Perrin fame gracefully,” Rumsey said. “Never overly gripped by the legendary performances of his older brothers. He’s very confident.”

Glacier’s Simon Hill and Aren Alexander-Battee ran to second and third place honors, respectively. Hill’s time was 15:55.79 and Alexander-Battee clocked in at 15:59.12.

Glacier finished fourth overall, edged out narrowly by Billings Senior for third place by one point.

“Very deep race at state today,” Glacier coach Jacob Deitz said.

“The highlight was Simon and Aren finishing second and third.”

Tiana Vladic of Billings Senior won her second AA girls title in three years, running a time of 17:40.71. Flathead’s Tori Noland-Gillespie placed 13th, with 19:08.61.

“Very exciting for her as a sophomore,” Rumsey said of Noland-Gillespie.

The Flathead girls finished fifth overall in the team competition, which Rumsey said was “disappointing.” However, Rumsey was happy with Flathead’s overall results in the girls race. “Our No. 2, 3 and 4 runners were all right there within reach,” she said.

“A tremendous state performance by our top five finishers,” Rumsey said.

In Class A, Polson’s Beatrix Frissell claimed her second consecutive state title and set a Class A state record with her time of 19:02.57. Molly Sitter, also from Polson, finished 13th.

Whitefish girls took second in the Class A team standings, Polson was fifth and Columbia Falls was sixth.

Joe Lamb of Columbia Falls placed third in the boys race, running a time of 16:42.20 and helping the Wildcats claim the boys title. Lamb’s colleague, Seth Umbriaco placed fourth individually.

Eureka’s Garrett Bates and Hunter Steele finished 11th and 12th overall in the Class B boys race and helped the Lions finish third as a team.

Last year’s Class B girls state champion, Anya Young of Bigfork, finished eighth individually. Mckay Guckenberg of Eureka placed 10th. Bigfork was sixth in the team placings.

Rumsey was encouraged by the performances of the schools from the Valley at the state meet this year.

“It’s just very exciting to see the depth in the Valley right now and all of us coaches support each other and support each other’s kids,” Rumsey said.
