Citizens should hear debate

| October 11, 2006 11:00 PM

I read Verdell Jackson's (my opponent for the State Senate) letter (9-28-06, The Leader) in which he declined my request for a series of debates. One would like to think that someone who has been a politician for eight years, as he has, would be willing and able to debate his opponent.

It is unfortunate for the people of our community that Verdell does not want to discuss the issues. Doesn't he want the public to know him?

As of today, there is only one debate/forum scheduled, which is in Bigfork. Senate District Five is huge, about 550 square miles, and all citizens deserve an opportunity to meet and see the candidates in a debate environment. It gives the people a real opportunity to learn about their candidates.

I am willing to meet my opponent and debate the many critical issues we face. My opponent is not willing.

I remain committed to meeting as many of you as possible. To date, we have been to 3,300 homes in the district. If I haven't met you in person yet, I look forward to doing so before the election.

I remain committed to an issue campaign.
