Viking wrestlers host meet, hoops teams split pair

Six Vikings wrestlers picked up wins Tuesday as Bigfork hosted its quad meet against Eureka, Florence, and Superior.

The Vikings went 8-12 overall at the meet, getting six of their eight wins via pin.

Eli Tidwell and Colten Wroble each picked up two victories at the match as Tidwell pinned Eureka’s Dominik Petiar in 43 seconds and Austin Warren in 1:39. Wroble pinned Superior’s William Buchannen in 53 seconds and also earned a 9-3 decision over Eureka’s Jackson Humel.

Ryder Nollan, Vaughn Pendlay, Archie Brevik, and Dale Relyea also picked up wins for the Vikings.

Eureka went 8-6 at the meet while Florence was 4-0 and Superior lost all three of its matchups.

Bigfork’s wrestlers were back in action Saturday at the Choteau Classic as the Vikings picked up seven points to finish 30th in the varsity competition.

Tidwell earned four points by going 1-2, pinning Arlee’s jace Samsel in 1:31 in the second round of the 132-pound competition. Joseph Farrier earned Bigfork’s other three points by pinning Choteau’s Jacob Major in 29 seconds in the consolation bracket of the 170-pound weight class.

Woll won the 145-pound sub-varsity bracket with a 4-0 performance at the tournament while Pendlay went 5-1 to finish third in the 145-pound B division.

In basketball action, the Vikings and Valkyries were both on the road at Thompson Falls last week.

Bigfork 42, Thompson Falls 52

Injuries did in the Valkyries in the second half at Thompson Falls Thursday as Bigfork fell to the Bluehawks, 52-42. Bigfork led 19-17 at the half, but had to play the final two quarters without starters Ashton McAnally and Audrey Buenz after both players left the game with injuries.

The Valkyries got up 10 more shots in the contest, but made just 12 of 63 attempts while Thompson Falls made 19 of its 53. Thompson Falls also won the battle of the boards, out rebounding the Valkyries 36-28, including a 26-13 advantage on the defensive glass.

Emma Berreth led the Valkyries in scoring with 17 points in the loss and added five rebounds while Ansleigh Edgerton posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

Also scoring for Bigfork were Scout Nadeau, Isabella Santistevan, McAnally, and Buenz.

Bigfork 62, Thompson Falls 58

Strong second and third quarters by the Vikings were the difference in Thompson Falls Friday as Bigfork picked up a four-point win over the Bluehawks.

Colton Thorness anchored the Viking effort on both sides of the court, leading Bigfork in scoring with 16 points while also pulling down four rebounds and blocking seven shots. Walker Fisher chipped in with 12 points, four assists and three steals while Levi Taylor had 11 points and a team-high five rebounds.

The Bluehawks jumped out to a 20-15 lead after one quarter of play, but the Vikings came back with a strong second quarter to grab a 33-32 halftime advantage.

Thorness and Fisher combined for 15 of the 19 points in the third quarter for the Vikings as Bigfork built a 52-44 lead after three before holding on in the fourth for the win.
