Flathead grapplers win Pacific NW tourney
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Flathead Brave Brawlers won another tournament, and it’s a big one – three individual winners helped them take the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High School.
Cade Troupe (126 pounds), Tanner Russell (170) and Asher Kemppainen (132) all won their weight classes, with Troupe earning the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Flathead scored 214.5 points to 182 for Mt. Spokane. Mead, Washington was third at 148.
Glacier, which had a champion in 106-pounder Josh Melton, was 12th in the 17-team tournament, scoring 72 points.
Flathead coach Jeff Thompson was just as pleased with Garett Rieke, whose strong return from a torn ACL and then a broken leg continued with a second-place showing at 182 in Spokane.
“It was just so exciting to watch Garett Reike step back on the mat after a two-year break,” Thompson said. “This Flathead team just worked so hard over the Christmas break and that hard work is paying dividends.”
Fin Nadeau was also a runner-up for Flathead at 145 pounds. Placing third were Zaybin Stewart at 195, Brendan Barnes at 138 and Noah Poe-Hatten at 152.
Glacier’s Melton added three falls to his narrow 8-6 first-round win on Friday.
“Josh had a great two weeks of winter break practices and it showed today,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “He had made some great strides since the start of the year.”
The Wolfpack’s Lance Fretwell rallied from a first-round loss to take fourth at 132. He avenged that pin by Mt. Spokane’s Hudson Buth with a 4-3 wrestle-back win over Buth.
