Eureka, Libby stay perfect; Dawgs top Cats

The Flathead Braves football team failed to get on the scoresheet as they battled Missoula Sentinel at Legends Stadium on Friday.

Sentinel won 42-0 and improved to 3-0.

Flathead fell to 0-3 on the season.

“We’ve just got to get better at the little things, just focus on the little things,” Flathead coach Matt Upham said. “Do a n etter job of getting the guys in position to make plays. We’ve just got to get better at the fundamentals.”

Flathead visits Missoula Hellgate next Friday as the Braves search for their first win of the season.

HELENA — Down 20 points at the half to Helena Capital, the Glacier Wolfpack started to mount a comeback.

It started with Casey Peiffer’s 57 yard score off a kick return.

Glacier scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and clamped down defensively, holding Capital to seven points.

Colin Bowden scored two touchdowns and Drew Deck ran a kick return into the end zone.

Though the Wolfpack (1-2) came up short, coach Grady Bennett was proud of the effort.

“Our kids never quit,” Bennett said. “We got down but we battled all the way to the end. I’m proud of our guys, never quitting and fighting until the end.”

Glacier hosts Butte next Friday, 7 p.m. at Legends Stadium.

LIBBY — Libby junior running back Dawson Young had two 100-yard games as the Loggers opened the season with lopsided wins over Whitefish and Browning.

But Friday night he nearly eclipsed his season total as the Loggers routed Ronan, 55-6.

Young ran for 223 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns. Young entered the game with 230 yards on 55 yards and four scores.

In addition to his vision and the ability to evade tacklers, Young had outstanding blocking from everyone around him.

“The offensive line played great football, but we also had great blocking from our fullbacks, receivers and tight ends,” Loggers head coach Neil Fuller said.

Libby, which has had some lean years lately, is 3-0 and hopeful for a playoff berth after a 5-4 campaign in 2018 left it just short of the postseason.

While coach Fuller isn’t talking playoffs yet, he credited his players for putting the time in during the offseason.

“The kids worked hard and we just want to keep getting better every week,” he said.

Libby also got touchdowns from Aydan Williamson, Ryker McElmurray, David Patterson and Hunter Hoover.

Libby totaled 443 yards rushing while limiting the Chiefs (0-3) to 156 total yards.

The Chief’s lone standout plays were a 62-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Kelsch to Matthew Victor and an interception by Trapper McAllister.

The Loggers (3-0) host Columbia Falls Friday. The Chiefs (0-3) host Polson. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.

Eureka held Deer Lodge to just six points.

Chet McCully ran for two touchdowns and Hank Dunn threw two touchdowns, passed for a two point conversion and kicked four extra points.
