Glacier, Whitefish students qualify for DECA conference
Thirty-three Glacier High School students qualified for the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, during Montana’s recent state DECA competition.
Thirteen schools and 525 students competed in the event, held Feb. 10-12 at Fairmont Hot Springs. Whitefish, Polson and Flathead also participated.
“This was a very successful year,” Glacier adviser Josh Munro said. “For us to qualify 33 spots and have two-thirds of our group make finals was fantastic. These kids have worked hard. DECA is such a great way for students to apply classroom learning to real-life scenarios. DECA helps students to think not only professionally but also ethically and strategically in business settings.”
Glacier brought 61 students to the event, with 42 making it to the finals and 21 placing in the top three. The Wolfpack won 11 events, with 14 students earning state championships. Glacier added 10 runners up and nine third-place finishers.
Whitefish had four individuals capture three state championships for the school.
Glacier won the Shark Tank Challenge, an award that includes a $1,000 prize from Sky Federal Credit Union. Whitefish was given the Spirit Award and Munro was named Adviser of the Year.
“I could not have won without the hardworking students I get to work with each year,” Munro said. “We have had a great two-year run in which we have we’ve had a combined 182 finalists and 76 qualifiers and one international champion. I truly appreciate the recognition from my fellow advisers.”
