Glacier girls second at Missoula City Invite

MISSOULA – Eden Flake won the 100-meter breaststroke to highlight the Glacier Wolfpack’s second-place showing at a Missoula City Invitational swim meet Saturday.

Flake finished her race in 1 minute, 12.16 seconds. The Wolfpack, which finished second in the 10-team meet to Missoula Hellgate, also had a win in the 200 freestyle relay.

Swimming legs on the 200 relay were Flake, Carolyn Dye, Mady Toren and Emily Cleveland. The same quartet finished second in the 400 freestyle relay.

“These girls got a lead and created some smooth water for Mady Toren and Emily Cleveland,” Karen Bouda, coach for both Kalispell teams, said. “They just nailed it.”

Flake was also second in the 100 freestyle, and Dye was third in the 100 freestyle and 200 IM.

Cleveland met the state qualifying standard with her time in the 50 freestyle, and teammate Megan Anderson did the same in the 100 freestyle. That gives Glacier 21 state qualifiers so far.

Flathead received victories from sophomore Lily Milner in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Her times were 24.38 and 59.52. The only other double-winner among the girls was Butte’s Catherine Russo (200 IM, 100 freestyle).

“Lily is a fierce sprinter,” Bouda said. “She’s out on that first 25 and hits the turn first and then there’s just no chance to catch her.”

Missoula Sentinel won the boys’ team title.

Flathead’s Ayden Strobbe-Barry won the boys’ 50 freestyle in 23.82. It was his first finish below 24 seconds, Bouda said.

The next best individual finish came from Glacier’s Drew Bouda, who was second in the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle.
