GREAT FALLS — Bozeman picked up 10 points in the final two matches — a major decision at 120 and a pin at 126 — to rally by Flathead for a 34-29 win in the championship match at the AA Duals on Saturday.

Flathead, which had been the top-ranked team for much of the season in the Class AA Coaches Poll, fell to No. 2 this week behind Bozeman.

Colby Martin (170), Tucker Nadeau (182) and Michael Lee (285) had pins for Flathead in the finale.

Nadeau is now 41-0 on the season. He won by pin in Flathead’s 38-21 semifinal win over Great Falls High and by forfeit in a 35-32 quarterfinal victory over Billings Senior.

Flathead, holding a 19-2 dual mark on the season, has three more Western AA outings this week at home — Thursday versus Missoula Big Sky/Loyola and then Saturday with Helena High and Helena Capital.

“Overall, we are very happy with how we wrestled today,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

“In the finals with Bozeman we gave it all we had and went after their horses, but just came up a little short. What an exciting dual. Any dual that comes down to the last match is just so exciting for the fans.

“Bryce Shaffer had a great weekend. He beat two ranked kids. His offense is really starting to click.

“Also, Colby Martin got a nice pin for the team in the finals at 170. Jaden MacNeil is really coming on and put in a great performance this weekend. He really impressed us with his game today.

“We just have to get better and continue to improve to beat Bozeman at state,” he added.

“They have a good team with some hammers. It’s going to be a battle, a dogfight in three weeks (at state) at the Metra.”

Glacier went 3-1 on the day, finishing with a 36-30 win over Great Falls C.M. Russell.

The Wolfpack lost to Billings West 40-30, Missoula Big Sky/Loyola 42-26 and Butte 48-12.

“Overall we are continuing to see good growth across the whole team,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.

“Some of the breakthroughs the guys are experiencing are becoming more significant. We are continuing to work to be a bit more aggressive on the feet, but I felt we wrestled well on top and bottom. We had some guys today that proved that they can compete with some of the best guys in the state.”

Glacier has three Western AA duals this week — Tuesday at Missoula Hellgate and Saturday at home versus Helena Capital and Helena High.
