The 'rookie representative' reports from Helena

by Rep. Zac Perry
| February 3, 2015 6:33 AM
As your representative in Helena, it’s important to me that I keep you informed on the progression of this legislative session. What follows is a short recap.

My experience thus far in Helena has been wonderfully overwhelming. With access to professionals in various fields, legislative staff who are always willing to help and colleagues passionate about so many different issues, I am able to become as informed as possible before voting yea or nay on bills.

I am fortunate to serve on three committees. In Judiciary, we are hearing many bills that address domestic violence, parole board oversight and enhancing digital privacy protections. In Agriculture, we have heard bills ranging from the revision of bison laws to pesticide testing. In F.R.E.T. (energy and telecommunications), we have primarily been focused on net-metering legislation that deals with owners of solar energy systems and how much electricity they can add to the grid for credit.

As your rookie legislator, I have learned the legislative process and gained insight on how to achieve positive outcomes for the communities I serve and constituents I represent. So I am pleased to announce that I have introduced 10 bills, four of which have passed the House: House Bills 49, 157, 224 and 246. To learn about the specifics of these bills and others that interest you, visit online at www.leg.mt.gov/css/default.asp.

I urge any voter from the district to contact me with comments and concerns related to legislation. Whether you voted for me or not, I am here on your behalf working for you. By engaging in the legislative process, you can participate in addressing the needs and concerns of our area — strengthening and improving our health care system, preserving quality public education, protecting the vulnerable from abuse, keeping our water clean and protecting our civil liberties.

With only three months left in the session, I need your participation in our legislative process to help ensure the voices of Columbia Falls, Hungry Horse, Martin City, Coram, West Glacier, Essex and Polebridge are heard loud and clear in Helena. I look forward to hearing from you and the opportunity to continue working hard to represent House District 3.

Rep. Zac Perry, D-Hungry Horse,  represents House District 3.
