Big Mountain biking shifts into high gear

Top, expert-class riders take off on the first lap of the race. There are three classes of riders: expert, sport, and beginner. The experts complete three laps around the top of the mountain while the other two classes complete just one. Below right, a rider bites the dust while trying to negotiate a sharp turn near the bottom of the first lap. The race has been held on Tuesdays in years past, and the turnout of 70 competitors was much bigger this year, partly due to no competition from the farmers market in Whitefish.
