There are 19 bouts on tap for tonight’s eighth annual Crosstown Boxing Smoker, with doors set to poen at 5:30 p.m. and fights to start an hour later at the Trade Center at Flathead County Fairgrounds.

The bouts, which feature boys and girls from six different schools in the Flathead Valley, are set up by the Glacier and Flathead wrestling associations with all the proceeds from the event going to support wrestling programs in the region. The group has donated close to $80,000 in the past seven years back into wrestling clubs throughout the area.

The 19 bouts this year are a marked uptick from even a year ago, with nearly 70 kids signing up for the program. There were 15 fights last year.

Each kid is required to practice at least three times with the Flathead Boxing Club, which helps at the event with coaching and officiating. The bouts consist of three one-minute rounds scored by four judges. Each fighter is required to wear boxing headgear for protection.

Some of the area’s best athletes are on the card.

Among the noteables, Glacier’s Tadan Gilman is signed to play football at Montana State next year, and Bigfork’s Matt Farrier and Flathead’s Tucker Nadeau each finished third in their class at 170 pounds at the state wrestling championships in February. Glacier’s Adam Bartlett is a national champion in taekwondo.
